As a way to generate more business for our 'Mock Firm' Helix Design we were asked to generate a Group Marketing Package. This package consisted of:

firm 'branding' document, with 2D and 3D graphic templates
business cards for mock firm partners
brochure describing firm philosophy experience leadership etc.
organization chart plus single-page biographies for each team leader, and supporting groups
firm summary document, per competition guidelines
business plan for mock firm
YouTube vidio per cometition guidelines

Though out the semester we had weekly minute minutes to talk about the assignment and how we were delegate the deliverable. My contribution to the group was the biographies for each team leader and supporting groups. I assisted with the business plan, and organizational chart as well.

Networking - AIA Women in Architecture

For my second Networking Event I attended an AIA Triangle Women in Architecture Committee meeting. The evening was broken up into three parts first was networking, second was viewing the documentary “A Girl is a Fellow Here”: 100 Women Architects in the studio of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the last part was open discussion on the documentary. The meeting was held at the Goels Plaza located in Morrisville, NC.

I really enjoyed this meeting it was so much different than the previous Networking Event I attended. One thing I enjoyed the most was the Networking Scavenger Hunt that started the evening. We were all given a sheet with 9 categories, and were left to meet people that fulfilled those categories. It was a great opportunity to get everyone out of their comfort zone and force then to introduce themselves to new people.

Prior to this even I have a pre-conceived opinion of Frank Lloyd Wright being a womanizer and male sovinest. But after viewing this film I saw a different side of Wright, one that was supportive of women throughout his career despite the common public opinion.

The film we watch focused on 6 of the hundreds of women employed in Wright's Studio as well as Taliesin West. Those 6 women were follows: Marion Mahony (1871-1961), Isabel Roberts (1871-1955), Lois Davidson Gottlieb (1926-presant), Jane Duncombe (1925-presant), Eleanore Petterson (1916-2003), Read Weber (1908-1990).

Assignment 5.0 - Research Paper

In an ever-changing design world, new trends, and ideas are always formulating, and as designers it is important for us to always be up to date. After working in a design firm for my internship I saw the heavy impact the economy had on our design world, and used that as the topic for my research paper.

The credit crisis in 2007 resulted in a global recession in 2008. Business' of all types were hit by this crash, but the design world was impacted heavily, with results of widespread layoffs, government bailouts, foreclosures, and abandoned projects and work sites. This put many designers out of work left to either pursue new careers entirely, or find new and innovative means of occupying their time.

It was obvious from the start of this most recent recession that many differences could be noticed compared to the most recognized Great Depression. Designers today didn't have the luxury of President Roosevelt's New Deal, giving them work and opportunities.

Countries were impacted differently from this economic crash and not all negatively, countries like China, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, and many other Middle Eastern countries flourish during these harsh years, where design firms in countries like the USA, Germany, and Britain put a to many if not all projects, and in worst cases going out of business.

Many designers used this time off to update their technological skills, as well as their portfolio, hoping that when the economy turned around they would be a step ahead of their competition. And with Green and sustainable design around every corner LEED certification was also a common trend over the past few years.

But one of the biggest changes since coming out of the recession was the change in client/designer relationships. Many clients are phasing their project where as before they would do everything at once. Clients are also being smarter about their options shopping around and checking out internet resources before making decisions. Clients have also expected designers and sellers to reduce their rates and prices because of the downturn, something designers are rightfully hesitant to do.

For the Chicago Architecture Today design competition I am working with Helix Design Inc. In our previous meeting we were asked to sketch some rough ideas for a possible logo to represent our firm. Adjectives that we thought would be important in incorporating into our logos were: fluidity, 2 towers, greens and greys, sustainable design, and futuristic. For the Avenues event the Professional Practice students had the opportunity to sign up for mock interviews with a variety of different design firms. This gave us a chance to have a professional in the field review and give us feedback on our Personal Marketing Packages we did for our class.

Over the past few years I begun to lean more towards graphics and photography, and since there wasn't a professional photographer there to speak with I interviewed with Keith from Out of Our Minds Studio an Animation and Graphics Studio. The interview was very helpful in regards to my portfolio, I received great feedback, but I was disappointed that Keith said his firm was shying away from doing graphics, which is what I was really interested in talking about.

Networking - VA Tech Alumni Association

As one fo my Networking Events I attended the NC Triad Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association. Even though this event is usually catered to only VA Tech Alumni, the UNCG students that attended were welcomed with open arms. The event was hosted by Tom Hughes the President of the NC Triad Chaper. It was held in the Volvo Trucks North America building located in Greensboro, NC.

The event started with a brief H'orderves social followed by a presentation by Jack Davis the Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. Jack introduced one of the colleges biggest projects the Lumenhaus. The Lumenhaus is a 100% self sustaining house that draws inspiration from The Farnsworth House by Miles Van Der Rohe. The house began as a research project in 2002 and developed in to a full scale building, that has entered many competitions including one in Madrid Spain where it came in first place. Since coming back to the USA the house has been featured in Times Square NY, and Millennium Park in Chicago.

I really enjoyed hearing about a different way of approaching design, which I think VA Tech does, and the fact that they are using research and actually full-scale builds to create new and innovative approaches to design.

A brief synapses of our current Studio project:

This studio will be concentrating on a historic commercial building located in downtown Greensboro. Since the mid 1940's Deal's Printing company has housed it's business in the lower level of the building. Since then Charlie and Ruth Jones have bought out the building and have began to envision many new ideas they hope to instill in the buildings future.

The first week of our studio was dedicated to the introduction of the project, and the owners of the building. Phase I consisted of Site visit, Interviews and Research. Our first site visit was on Wed 12th. Charlie and Ruth gave our class a tour of the building while noting key parts of the building that presented present problems as well as hopes for certain spaces. After our initial tour we broke off into groups to begin measuring the space for our digital model as well as our other break down groups for the project. After the allocated amount of time for measurements and pictures we meet back upstairs with the Jones' where we were able to get a more formal idea of who they were as people and as a non-profit company. We also had a chance to ask them more in-depth questions about where they saw the building going and their main goals for the building.

Here is an idea of what they Jones' envision:

1st Floor:

Central lobby area that will give customers access to both PB&Java and Theater space.
PB&Java: a cafe that will offer the public of Greensboro multiple varieties of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Large enough for 49 people.
A theater space that will encompass a 36" high stage, movable seating and if possible a full backstage area. Large enough to seat 150 people.
Shared restrooms adjacent to both the cafe and theater.

2nd Floor:

6 Dormitory style rooms that will hold 2 interns each.
Shared restrooms, kitchen and living quarters for interns.
3 Private guest rooms that will house guest of Charlie and Ruth. (Must have private access to 3rd floor)
Shared restroom for guests.

3rd Floor:

Private residence for Charlie and Ruth.
Larger kitchen, prep, and storage space for "the Grub"
Studio office for Ruth.

For our first assignment in Professional Practice we were asked to submit a Cover Letter, Resume, and Single Page Summary Portfolio. This assignment would be used in determining which of the four Mock Firm Groups we would be placed in for a later assignement. We had a very short period of time to put these together in order to meet the competition deadline, which was helpful for me as I work better under pressure.

At Napier University they have what is called "Fresher's Week" which is basically a week of social activities for new, returning and international students to get to know each other, make new friends and integrate. Some events were free, some you could purchase a Freshers Week Pass and head to all the late night pubs with after party after after party, and others you purchased individual tickets specifically for that event. I happened to purchase two individual tickets to the Safari Tour and the Pitlochry Highland Games.

the Safari Tour: We went to one of Scotland's Premier Safari Parks, Blair Drummond. Here they had what your normal zoo's have, except the cages. All the animals roamed freely. Downfall was when you went to see animals such as lions you could only drive by, no walking. Plus was we were able to ride a wave boat to a loan island where they kept their chimpanzee's.

Pitlochry Highland Games: One of the most associated things with Scotland is the Highland Games and I just happened to be so lucky as to see one of the last official games held in Scotland for the 2010 season. The games were held in a small town called Pitlochry. It is a very picturesqe town, with little tea shops, sheep shops, and your tourist hussel and bussel. There was tartan and kilts everywhere, even a few "true traditional" highlanders. We were able to experience pipe bands, solo piping, highland dancing, tossing the caber, throwing the hammer, tug of war, track events, cycling, and a pipe band parade. Plus there was food and whiskey galore.

Its been a while...but a very busy while for me. So many fun and exciting things have taken place since my last post, so I thought I would finally tune you all in on all my adventures.

Lets see where to begin...Only a few days after meeting my new flatmates we all decided to do one of the staples of Edinburgh - visit the Royal Mile or High Street. This is the street that connects both the Castle and Palace of Holyroodhouse (where the Queen stays on vacation). This street is the most popular street in Edinburgh, lined with shops, pubs and more history than most know about. It is also surrounded by a maze of medieval wynds and closes (I now know where JK Rowling got her inspirations for Harry Potter).

The majority of the buildings located on the Royal Mile are 17th- to 19th century tenement buildings. And despite the name the Royal "Mile" is actually a little longer than a mile. The "Royal" comes from being used by past kings and queens as a processional route between the castle, parliament and the palace.

the First few days

Arrived in Edinburgh safe and sound, and defiantly with a rush of excitement. Between the hussel of a new confusing airport, last minute changing of flight details I didn't have a second to spare until i met Napier Direct to be picked up. the first day was a lot of waiting. we were taken from the airport to pick up our keys for our new flat at the Craiglochart campus pictured below. We walked up to see "the Egg" a dominating structure that completely contradicts everything else you've just seen. It is squished in between the more traditional buildings. It definatly has its wow factor.

After a long first day i was able to meet my other flatmates. Cassie from Tennessee, Marie from Austria, Amandine from south of France, and Kaycee from California. We took a trip back to campus, and to Princes St one of the most popular streets in Edinburgh. It lies between New and Old town. Heres some views i saw on the way:

Day 4 - Tuesday March 9, 2010

I actually slept. Finally I got to wake up to my alarm clock and not the pigeons.

We eat breakfast in the room again... today we meet at 9:15 to go to a few museums. We find out Ben's sick today and has to stay in the hostel. The first museum we go to is the National Museum.
The artifacts are interesting (I guess) but very repetitive. I can't look at a ball of stone and see art. We go through the 3 levels fairly quickly and have a lot o f time to kill. We go to the gift shop and look around. Time to go but we are missing Carlos.

We go to eat lunch at this really small restaurant. It was good but way too spicy for my taste. We got to try Indian Icecream...it comes on a stick. It was good but kind of chalky tasting.
Next museum. National gallery of modern art. We aren't allowed to take pictures here. I like this museum better but the circulation is really odd. There are a lot of paintings that I would love to buy. Hopefully they have a good shop...They don't. Out of a list of around 13, I didn't find one painting in the shop.

After the museum we decide to go back to the hotel for about an hour or so before we go for dinner.

We have Indo-Chinese food tonight. The place we go to smells aweful. Like a litter box mixed with a portajohn. No one can handle the smell. We can't wait for the food to come to mask the smell.

The food is pretty good. Different. We walk around the shops for a while then head back to the hostel.

Day 3 - Monday March 8, 2010

I woke up early again today. The cause - pigeons and chanting from the mosque across the way. We all decide to sport our Fabindia clothing today. We meet at 9:15 to head to Qutb Minar.

We get a surprise when we get off of the bus, we aren't the only white people today. There are a lot of school kids visiting the site today. Tina gives us 15 minutes to start off with. Me and Robert head off to explore. Its absolutely amazing. It is an example of Indo-Islamic Architecture, and is the tallest brick minaret in the world (72.5 meters). It is comprised of red sandstone, intricate carvings and quotes from the Qur'an.

After the 15 minutes we head back to the main entrance to meet one of tina's old professors, and flat mate. He speaks with us for a while and then leads us around the complex. The size, scale and detail of everything is breathtaking. I can't imaging trying to build a structure of this magnitude without the technology of today.
We get swarmed by a huge group of school girls. After they finally disperse Tina's professor says "now you know how it feels to be a celebrity" - i feel bad for celebrities.
After walking around on our own for a while longer its time to head to lunch. We end up at this really upscale restaurant. It's got to be the best Indian food that Ive had so far. Today is Anna's birthday (the big 21) they bring out cake.After lunch we head to Humayan's Tomb. Another example of the symmetry explored in architecture, the use of scale, and the incorporation of water in their design. I really don't like our guide he continually yells at us for taking pictures, and he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Ancient Indians must have been massive, the rise of their stairs are extreme.I end up walking around the tomb alone, just taking it in. I eventually meet Megan and Anna. They are watching a young boy work, or we aren't really sure if hes working he basically just moves a water hose from one spot to another, creating a huge puddle of water.

Once we make it around the entire place we meet with the rest of the group. Tina shows us a game she used to play as a child. Who can knock the opponents stamen off first. Its invigorating..
Tonight we are getting the opportunity to see a live performance of some Indian music, but before that we eat at this place called the "American Diner." It's the worst imitation of American food I've ever ate, I wonder if this is how Indian's feel when they come to America and eat Indian food.

It's international woman's day, this is what the performance is for. The first performer is really good, but we are all so exhausted from the day that we can't make it through the second more traditional performer.

Day 2 - Sunday, March 7, 2010

We have a late start today, Tina hopes we can all get adjusted with a little extra sleep. But of course because I can sleep in I wake up at 7 am and can't fall back asleep. Breakfast is different here.

We meet downstairs at 11:30. On today's agenda: a guided tour of New Delhi.
First stop Parliament. It's beautiful - a road with perfect symmetry, beautiful gardens, and amazing colorful people. We get our first glimpse of hawkers.
There are a lot of soldiers/guards with guns here. We continuously get whistled at for standing or getting too close to things.

I begin to realize how different our cultures are, and how much our group sticks out. Everywhere we walk heads turn. People here seem to be fascinated by us, and keep asking to take pictures with us.After walking around for a little, our guide takes up back to our bus. It's time to head towards the Arch of India.
Being as its a Sunday, it's very crowded. The hawkers are a lot more intense here, we get mobbed. Tina has to save Carlos from getting pinned with an Indian flag by this random woman. So after about five minutes of constant attention from school boys, we've all had enough and make our way back to the bus.Indian McDonald's for lunch. Defiantly not like American McDonald's, at all. No option of beef just doesn't seem right. But it's safe, so I'll settle with chicken. After we leave McDonald's we get cornered by a little girl and her mother, both with arms full of beaded necklaces. Their like mosquitoes, you swat at them but they wont go away.

The bus takes us to the Mughal Gardens. It's packed because its a Sunday. Males and females have to go through two separate security lines. Although the gardens are probably beautiful its really hard to see or take in anything, its so crowded. We're like cows being herded through the gardens.

After the gardens we head to Fabindia to buy some outfits to help up blend in more. There are too many choices. It takes everyone forever to decide what to buy. As we wait for everyone to finish we walk around shops in the surrounding area. There are some really interesting design shops.

We eat at a Southern Indian resturant. I try the paper plain. And its just that, plain. Time to go back and get ready for the next day.

Day 1 - Friday March 5, 2010

I woke up with a surreal feeling. I can't believe that today is finally here. After the months of planning and preparation, the actual day that we leave for India has arrived!
My mom, dad, Aaron, and me make our way to the airport for my first airplane ride ever! I've come to the conclusion that the airport needs a "how to navigate the airport for dummies" board with step by step instructions for people like me that just don't get it...

We all play cards while waiting for the flight to Chicago. Our plane is very small, only three seats wide. First plane ride = SUCCESS!

When we arrive in Chicago we all go eat, I get overpriced Mexican food, and a neck pillow for the next plane ride. It's time to board the longest flight in my life, literally. The only thing that made this plane ride not a complete waste was that I was able to watch a bunch of movies. I got yelled at by the flight attendants several times for opening my window.
WE LAND! It seems to take forever to get off the plane and through customs. Baggage is also another new hassle for me. We all find each other again and exchange money while we're waiting for Tina to arrive.We go outside and wait for our bus. My first observation is that it's very dusty, and there are a lot of random dogs. Our bus arrives. Traffic is crazy. Drivers honk constantly. Our ride to our hostel seems to take just as long as the plane ride here.

We arrive. Megan and I get our room assignment first. It's bigger and nicer than I was expecting it to be. We all meet in Ben in Robert's room where we get our maps, common phrases in Hindi, and some snacks.
Back to our room. Megan finds a present in the shower, a lizard. Nice. I can't sleep, because, I'M IN INDIA!!!

Pulsating Ambiance

Pulsating - to throb or move rhythmically
Ambiance - a feeling or mood associated with a particular place, person, or thing (atmosphere)

When starting this project we researched ancient baths and rituals. I found myself straying away from choosing a particular culture that I found interesting, instead forcing myself to think more about the individual and the community they would be creating within my bath. I choose to design a space with particular client characteristics in mind. Individuals that have undergone either a tragic event, illnesses, or something else that temporarily altered their body causing them to be restricted to the constraints of a wheelchair. In order for my space to help these individual overcome their constraints, hydrotherapy has been introduced.

Hydrotherapy: the therapeutic use of water; Hydrotherapy is a known form of natural pain relief. Hydrotherapy uses water to treat the body by stimulating and redirecting the flow of blood and carrying waste products away from the cells. The focus of hydrotherapy is to rid the body of toxins that may be causing joint pain and inflammation. This is done through hot and cold stimuli

Perspective View 1:

To enter my space you will descend down a ramp that wraps around the bath's exterior walls, here you will get your fist glimpses of the bath. An open space allows for the individuals to have an outdoor experience while still experiencing a phyological closed bath in private. Four individual seating areas are located on the four corners of the space. East seat in inset to allow the individuals to soak while experiencing the pulsating jets.

Located in the center of my structure is a fountain that is tiered to creating a waterfall effect. Here is where I derived my idea of pulsating. Also to support the rhythmic pulses that escape from the fountain I have echoed the pattern onto my floor in my tile work.

Walking barefoot the feet got dusty, which, as the floors of their houses were no different from the ground outside. The richer, or upper class Egyptians had wooden or clay footbaths for washing their feet, usually there were two basins as only one foot could fit in each basin
At Tebtunis public bathhouses have been excavated, the oldest dating to the third century BCE. They had showers, stone basins and a stove to heat the bath water.^[3]
While a few bathrooms and tubs have been discovered most Egyptians seemed fine with cleansing through aspersion or by a dip in a canal or the river. They had wash basins and probably filled them with a natron and salt solution from jugs with spouts and used sand as a scouring agent. They washed after rising and both before and after the main meals, but one may assume that their ablutions were mostly perfunctory. As mouth wash they used another solution called bed (bd: natron).

Patter Perception II

Well this is my second attempt at the pattern perception assignment. It is I admit a big improvement from the first one. My pattern started out as a picture of Washington D.C. when the Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom. I just used the mag. lasso tool and masked the part of the bloom that I thought was the pretties. I enhanced the cropped section using the Exposure adjustment. Then I copied and pasted multiple times and created my pattern. Then I inverted a few to add a little a little more interest to the peice.

A Thoughtful Reflection

There is no denying that we live in a world that depends heavily on computers. It wasn’t long ago that we thought the end of the world was soon to come because of the big Y2K event. So many advances have been made due to the invention of computers and computer aided design software, it’s hard to find flaws. But on the reverse side of that were do humans fit in?
Computer aided design software is highly effective and efficient, and has helped us to make huge leaps in our designs. Numerous design possibilities that 60 years ago would have been thought of as impossible, or time consuming have become a reality due to the computer, and its easy and fast calculations.
As a new designer I am only beginning to see how important computers are to the design process. Scanning a photo into a computer and clicking a few buttons to enhance it is only the beginning of endless possibilities the computer can offer.
On the other side I can’t see myself feeling as emotionally attached to a design that I sat in front of a computer clicking away at, as I do to a design that I have spent countless hours drafting out. Doing it the old fashion way and hand-drafting it out is by far the one time in my design process that I feel the most at ease, because I love to do it, and I’m good at it. But not only in drafting but also in hand rendering, there is just this personal touch that a client can see when you present your ideas. They can relate to the fact that this took you a long time.
As designers it’s hard for us in a time crunch to choose the slow way, by hand, rather than take the easy way out and use a computer. But also as designers I feel like it’s important for us to find that happy medium between computers and the human touch. We must look back to the past before we can move ahead.

The pattern that I was inspired by was by William Morris. The thing I like most about the pattern is the leaves radiating out from two opposing sides. This is what I tried to portray in my graphic ( I think I need a lot more practice). It started out as a photo of the toronto skyline.

It is my belief that we as a society of designers are in one continuous design process. Many movements have stemmed out as we have evolved , movements such as bauhaus, art deco, cubism, impressionism, modernism, all of these movements have helped us get to where we are today as designers. This theory is the reason why I believe what I believe. Many designers can talk about being Green and going Green, I think that one of the most effiecent ways of going Green is by helping to restore what is already here. My career goal is to become a historic presorvationist. Its olders building, houses, and places that I draw inspiration from. Its the litte sqeaks in the floor or doors that I find the most interesting. Those peices of character is what draws me into a space. It's almost as if the house is letting me in on a secret, telling me what has happened in it's lifetime.

The idea of seeing into the past is what I protrayed in my artifact. We need to understand and connect to those things that have passed before us to truely be good designers in the future.

David Wharton – Vice Chair of the Historic Preservation Commission

The City of Greensboro has a Historic Preservation Commission that oversees the historic district program and advises the City Council on historic preservation matters. David Wharton, Vice Chair of the HPC and I have been in contact over the last few days about what exactly it is they do for the city. He explained to me that the HPC oversees the three locally-designated historic districts in Greensboro – College Hill, Fisher Park, and Charles B. Aycock. They review, approve/deny applications when owners in these districts want to make changes or additions to their properties. Each change is governed by Greensboro’s historic Preservation Design Guidelines and Manual.
What’s so important about these structures is that each individual one has a story to tell, it’s a living record of the people who lived in and/or used it – the way they lived, their sense of style. Once these structures are lost, they are gone forever: unrecoverable. In this way, the buildings are a living and real connection to Greensboro’s past, and can tell present residents stories about where their city came from.
David Wharton’s job at the HPC impacts the city of Greensboro in many ways. Economical studies have shown that historic districts help neighborhoods retain and increase their property values, and can provide stability to neighborhoods in transition and decline. This is certainly true of all three Greensboro neighborhoods. They were either beginning to decline, or in deep decline when they were designated as historic districts and all have since become active, vital, and stable places to live. These districts are also available for the public at large, either by driving through them or taking the annual walking tours offered by a private group (Preservation Greensboro, Inc). They also provide Greensboro with a sense of place, that is, of being someplace rather than just anyplace. In that way, they help to give Greensboro its distinctive identity.
These districts not only have an impact within the city of Greensboro but also to the design world as a whole. The Greensboro historic districts have functioned as something of a Petri dish for innovative design ideas. Especially, the Charles B. Aycock district that pioneered preservation design by hiring a firm to come up with a neighborhood plan that included a proposal to renovate the 1926 World War Memorial Stadium and integrate its use with the surrounding neighborhood and nearby Farmers’ Curb Market. That plan was submitted in a design competition sponsored by the Congress for the New Urbanism (though it didn’t win). Unfortunately, the plan has never been implemented, but some of its proposals are included in the upcoming transportation bond package.

So I chose puzzel peices, every peice fits with the next except for the two larger peices which represent the two races in my concept. The two large peices are so close to being able to become one there just missing one thing.

Prejudice

Imagine trying to save someone on the verge of death, but they refuse your help. These individuals are neither depressed nor insane, their prejudice.
Natural disasters cause devastation all over the world, but in 2005, a hurricane that many of us will never forget hit the American coast and destroyed thousands of homes, businesses, and lives. All types of people came together after this horrific disaster to try and help the victims still trapped in Louisiana. As a nation we showed great compassion and care for the victims, but a small group of relief workers seemed to be ostracized during the mission.
A small documentary was made about Muslim victims and relief workers. Ruben Vaughan one of the Islamic relief workers said he experienced two different reactions from non-Muslims. In one instance some of the workers were helping carry supplies to affected areas when people would turn and ask them what they were doing saying, “We don’t need your help you can just take it back.” While others would load up their cars and help the workers on their way. Even such a small thing as wearing a hijab on their head would cause people to turn away from their help.
Prejudice is real and is still ever so present in our society, even in Greensboro. For instance when approaching the GTA bus ride feeling slightly prejudice against the individuals on the bus seemed to come naturally to most people. Scared, nervous, slightly germ phobic, and resentment for having to ride the bus with a bunch strangers seemed to be a common thread among my peers.
Prejudice can also be explained in terms of a force field that drives people apart, similar to two magnets when you have one negative and one positive charge. It seems that no matter how hard you try to just connect the two and create a whole, there’s always that force, that wall, that keeps the from one another.
A concept revolving around prejudice, interrupted into a bus for 4 relief workers, (two of which are of Islamic decent, and two of American decent) whom have two symmetrical sides on the bus. The symmetrical sides are a symbolic representation of the commonality of the four individuals. That although they may have different backgrounds they are all people just the same. The two communal areas for the four individuals are located in the center of the bus where a series of two pocket doors are located which gives the option to open it up as one major room where they can all become a whole. But like the magnetic force, there seems to be a something in the way that keeps the pocket doors seem from opening up completely. Only a small sliver of the adjacent communal area is able to be seen.
As individuals we need to understand that disasters know no prejudice it happens to everyone.

Mockery

When looking closely at Weatherspoon Art Museum I noticed that the entire building is made of nothing but horizontal and vertical lines. Ranging from the mortar lines in the brick walls, to the vertical columns located at the corner of Tate and Spring Garden, to the fence running along side the sculpture garden. Inspired by the simplicity of these two elements, I derived my idea.
Not wanting to contrast with the existing environment in which my bus shelter is to be placed, I choose to compliment it by using the same design elements displayed in the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The basics of my bus shelter consist of four verticals lines and two horizontal lines. The four vertical lines are made up of a simplified, elongated version of the existing columns located at the museum. To add interest to the structure the column heights vary. The two horizontal lines are made up of the roof structure and the seating. Coinciding with the mortar lines and the fencing the roof structure is a solid slab of horizontal wood. To answer functional needs, benches have been incorporated with the options of group seating, private seating or even the option of standing along the outskirts.
Inspired by elements displayed in the Weatherspoon Art Museum, I derived an idea of a coherent shelter by using simple lines to create a functional structure for the people of the Greensboro community.

Tête-à-tête was created by J. H. Belter in New York, New York, America during the years of 1850-60. It is made out of a combination of varies woods such as Rosewood, ash, pine, and walnut. Belter was know and is still known for his laminated and carved Rococo Revival rosewood parlor suites. His method of steaming several layers of wood glued together resulted in thin strong and curved pieces that could be carved. This chair was inspired by eighteenth-century French sources. Tête-à-tête consists of C- and S- curves and scrolls, curved cabriole legs, and carved ornamented flowers. This chair also known as confident was used for one on one discrete conversation.Made during the same time period Étagère is similar to tête-à-tête with its scroll shaped legs and S- and C- shaped scroll carvings. Tête-à-tête holds a high contrast to the Le Corbusier Petit Loveseat which also is for seating two people, but it neither has the intimacy desired in the tête-à-tête, nor the ornamented carvings and intricate detailing of the wood frame.

During this charette we focused on how to get the word out to the community at UNCG and also within the community of Greensboro. On of the ideas we came up with is called Shop Drop. Basically it consists of the oppisite of shop lifting. We would buy goods and replace the labels with our own as a way of spreading the word. The labels could be of our different bus shelter ideas to our buses to our studio mission statement. This is just a way of putting our idea out there in places that every one goes. Once we replaced the labels we would place the goods back in the store where customers are free to take the free of charge.

The Crazy Eights’After researching, decoding, and sorting through the myriad of codes, ergonomic issues, and proxemic issues we were better able to asses our models from both the bus shelter and shelter bus charrette's. It became apparent that our original designs, while creative and inventive, were lacking in several major fundamental areas. As a group we all have varying experience with codes, ergonomic and proxemic considerations, but generally these aspects of design are new, and untaught subjects we are eager to study further. We are all in agreement that the regulations published by ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) and various other sources, are absolutely pertinent to the design process; without these considerations impairment of fine innovative ideas is inevitable. We feel its highly important for designers, architects and even decorators to an extent, to educate themselves about necessary requirements, codes and human interactions within spaces in order to optimize the users overall experience. While ingenuity is at a premium in our industry it is also essential that we understand the how, and why aspects of codes, ergonomics and proxemic particularly as we continue to progress forward with sustainable design, which has its own intricate guide of requirements and regulations. The future of design will never be evident however, it is unmistakable that our responsibility is to our fellow citizens to create, and provide the most comprehensive, and universally acceptable designs possible. The four of us agree that our future as designers will be vastly influenced by the current design standards, and potentially new standards we set forth. The principles we learn now are going to make us all more proficient and competent designers, attributes that we should all be proud of.

Container Charette - Final sketch models

This first model shown is our Kid Bus/Fun Bus. This is for children ranging from ages 3-8. During a disaster we as a group felt it was important to entertain the children. For one sometimes kids don't really understand whats happening, what happened and not to say get in the way of adults but have way more pent up energy that they need to let loose. This way parent can feel comfortable letting their children a few at a time onto the fun bus to blow off some steam. Supervisors will be available on the bus to watch and keep the children safe. We felt that instead of having a bus that the victim stayed on it could be a bus that would go around to the different shelters for a few hours.
The childrens bus will include two coloring tables for smaller children; a building block station; a ball pit complete with 3 punching bag obstacles; a loft area with a slide that conects to the ball pit; and finally a dry erase board located in the hallway/isle for a few signatures from kids or pictures.

This model is of our faith/counseling bus. During/after natural disasters like Katrina you find groups banding together praying hoping for their family, and we felt this bus would be a good way for the victim to come into a safe open soothing environment and have the option to meet with other victims in the community room and talk about the past events or meet one on one in the Therapy room with a counslor. or even upstairs in the Zen room for a soothing experience a quite environment to meditate or lie down.

When I would eat in the caf and the EUC I never really thought about how much food is left on trays and wasted. I think that the idea of a trayless dining is great. I don't think I know anyone who's eyes are aren't bigger than their stomach. Although on the opposite side the idea is also bad because when you look at all the things college students carry around it's difficult to carry all your food and drnk also. Maybe theres a happy medium...

Where to begin…It’s hard to really put your finger on the best words to describe the city bus.
It all started on a hot day in September….just kidding…after studio yesterday I went upstairs to get on my computer to check out the Greensboro Department of Transportation website, and that right there was a feat in itself. It wasn’t the easiest thing to navigate or understand. When I finally found the maps of the bus routes I didn’t know where to begin. Basically it was roads with colorful lines on it, but as I’m looking at these maps thoughts are going through my head “What about the people that don’t have access to the internet or a computer how do they know what/where to go? Who am I going with because I definitely not going by myself…” After studying for a few more minutes and still not coming to any definite conclusion I just decide to give up and give it a go. Around the same time Megan comes up and asks if I want go with them (Megan, Meg, and Sara)…Thanks goodness I’m not going alone…So off we go, I pick up my camera at my apartment so I can get some nice candid shots of us on the bus and we head to Meg’s apartment. Turns out there is a bus stop right down the road from Meg’s apartment so we park our cars and start walking…After that it seems to be all down hill…Because none of us had ever rode the city bus in Greensboro we had know idea what to expect or what to do we didn’t know where we would end up, or if we’d make it back home…We hadn’t been at the bus stop for more than a minute when we see it flying down the rode towards us. So hurriedly we all scramble for our cash to pay the fare already confused. I was the first to get on so I was the Ginny pig. While inserting the money the driver starts asking me questions of where I’m going, if I’m getting off or going to the depot, obviously I didn’t know so I turn to the three behind me and ask are we going to the depot…confused and nervous I just mumble God knows what and walk to the back of the bus where there isn’t anyone. It’s funny to me now when I look back at it because I know those people could tell we were all newbes, because we were obviously the least comfortable with our surroundings. Even though there were numerous seats available near the front of the bus we headed straight to the back where there were four seats next to each other. Ironic since how as a white woman 50 years ago I would have preferred to sit in the front…So we’re riding on the bus, being challenged with the task of trying to stay in our seats. The bus obviously lacks in hydraulics and is bouncing around; slamming on brakes ever two seconds, and gives you whip lash.
We’ve been on the bus for around 10 minutes and the entire time I’m filming and we notice near the front of the bus this strange looking man keep looking at us and waving. 4 girls + 1 dirty man = really creeped out. Suddenly we see that we are pulling into the depot confusing and panic starts to set in again…”What do we do, do we stay on the bus? Do we get off? If we get off where do we go, what bus to we get on?” We come to the conclusion to ask the bus driver…As Megan and Meg head to the front to ask the bus driver which bus to get on Sara and I get trapped…We notice that the creepy man from the front of the bus is heading towards us I look at Sara see the second exit and start saying just get off, get off here…narrow escape…We wait for Megan and Meg, funny enough the bus driver didn’t understand us. He couldn’t understand why we would want to get on the bus just to go back to where we came from…Guess what neither did we mister…So we realize we need to be on bus nine so we board that bus and hand the driver our tickets, as we turn down the isle we realize there’s no seats together so we spilt up. The majority of the trip I’m twisted in my seat filming our journey when suddenly I look down and the man sitting two seats down from me has decided that he didn’t want to use just his seat but he’d also like to use mine too; he had his arm and hand propped up on the back of my seat prevented my from being able to lean back, because Lord knows I wasn’t touching his hand…My brain starts to mess with me, my back cramps up man I really wanted to lean back…Down the road we see familiar territory we’re approaching where we got on. We reach our destination and hurriedly get off the bus.

All in all this “adventure” has been just another game in second year studio. And the name of the game is trail and error…

This first week has kinda been a smack in the face...Being lazy and doing things totally opposite of studio this summer did not prepared me for this week at all. I really am looking forward to the projects coming up. This first project I think would have been better at a different time. I really would have enjoyed it more if it was prettier weather and I could have walked some of the way and really taken in the scenery. I'm looking forward to group work but I'm also not...Theres those pros and cons with everything but all in all I it was a good week

as busy as we are in iarc, we know we have loads of things we need and should be doing, but yet i always find myself doing other things...such as this sketch...i had my computer on so i could find some pictures to sketch...yeah so didn't happen. my computer went into screen saver mode and this picture came up (technically i should be in it to, but i copped myself out, sorry aaron...) so instead of doing the drawings I was supposed to be doing I ended up sketching my boyfriend aaron...funny how things work...I can always tell where my mind is...
